Officially, it's Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. Usually shortened to Krung Thep.
That's short for the full name, which is 168 letters, and listed in Guinness as the longest placename. It's a bit like LLPG in Wales, It means, "City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra's behest".
Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit.
Most Thai people know it, 'coz it was the lyrics to a pop song.
I wonder if we'll change the Western name from Bangkok to Krung Thep, like they've done for Myanmar/Burma, Peking/Beijing, Mumbai/Bombay, etc.
