And the 48% bit is a reference to an election the previous day. The loser vowed to fight on because even though the majority voted against him, they are actually the "left-wing fringe". The mainstream press in the US has been doing the same thing for a while. Bush's popularity is at 33%, and the 60+% who oppose him are referred to as a "radical".
