use some sort of pc-software/firmware to the camera for that or is that built in?

Well..
Nikon have this program for this type of activity. Camera Control Pro (which one can find info about here, and a trial version here).
You just set the camera to PTP mode (in the menu), and the software will then allow you to control the camera, even doing the shots above.
