# hahaha bloody typical!~

# Haha!
I wanted to do a Vettriano one myself, but couldn't think of anything, woo!

# Jack Hoggan is an appalling fraud.
His paintings are devoid of life and are just glorified old ladies' watercolours.

The man is adored by builders' wives across the country, but he's a craftsman, not an artist.

# At least he's getting paid for painting
not for a dirty bed or a tent or something.

# hahaha vicious!

# The same can be said of many artists
It's only because he's popular that he grates on as many people as like him.

# Not many people who are not srtists are lauded as such
I am not a fan of (Verity's reference) that Emin woman, but for the most part the britpack art was art.

Hoggan bases his whole career on 'not being conceptual' and, with a bit of craft, he is undermining art and deliberately misleading thousands of people who are wanting to learn about art.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with painting in what i refer to as the 'watercolour' manner, merely that he is a charlatan pretending he is more.

As an example - if someone came on here posting pictures which were photographs run through a posterise filter then it'd piss Verity off if that person was going 'round saying that her vectors or, perhaps a better example, mofaha's noised vectors were shit and theirs was real art.

# Oooh
I had the same argument many of times, but i haven't time to get into it tonight.

Anyway, I like your stuff!

# My what stuff?
My paintings?

Thank you!

# haha
Now tell me how much you love Beryl Cook!
(, Fri 25 May 2007, 19:41, archived)
# hah!
The woman is a popularist.

I think she is an improvement of Hoggan, and some of her paintings are excellent, but she has taken one series way beyond its natural end and has descended into a world normally reserved for greetings card illustrators.

# So he's a craftsman. So what? - I like craftsmanship.
I like the print in my hallway and I'm neither a builder or his wife.
You're just a snob.

# I am not opposed to his work
I am opposed to his going around slagging of artists and trying to pass himself off as something he is not.

It's his deliberate mis-education of others and continued slating of artists that pisses me off.

I like craftsmanship too.

# I'm with you on this
All the way.
(, Fri 25 May 2007, 19:37, archived)
# He's not that much of a craftsman
when you consider he copied a lot of his work out of an artists training manual.
(, Fri 25 May 2007, 19:46, archived)
# Similar to the work of furniture makers and
stonemasons responsible for amazing stonework in cathedrals.

Copied from or inspired by pattern books.

So what?

# It's nothing of the sort in my opinion
and I'd like to think I understand this as I am a cabinet maker. I also draw and I reference 'Anatomy for fantasy artists' by Glen Fabry. I can copy pretty much out of that to perfection now. It does not make me a talented artist, it simply means I have a talent for mimicry.

Vettriano simply copies figures from reference pictures and paints them a different colour. It requires very little talent. I know this because I do it all the time.
