This is a question Books

We love books. Tell us about your favourite books and authors, and why they are so good. And while you're at it - having dined out for years on the time I threw Dan Brown out of a train window - tell us who to avoid.

gerald's game.
it was this book that helped me to realise that stephen king had long since become a dull, repetitive cunt and that i shouldn't bother reading any more of his books.

lords and ladies
first discworld book i ever read and i've loved them ever since. a new book tends to come out about a week before my birthday, so i always get the latest one off my sister.

jaws
my favourite book and my favourite film, both about my favourite creature.

kevin the kitten
the books we were given to read in school. such utter shite that i was determined to find something better to read myself. i learned far more from the books i wasn't supposed to read than i ever would have from books about a stupid bloody kitten.

Stephen King's books are so long and tedious even he doesn't bother reading them any more
That's why he hired that poor woman to write all the Dark Tower stuff for him so he could use it as reference later

the last thing of his that i actually enjoyed reading
was eyes of the dragon. not a bad story, but completely overshadowed by the fabulous illustrations

That was a fab story
I remember the nose-picking incident

(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:40, closed)

Totally agree about Gerald's Game
I'd read all his stuff up to that point, got about 50 pages in and thought "this is shit and I've had enough." Not read another one since.

don't try reading rose madder
the first half is like he's been watching sleeping with the enemy whilst very stoned. the second half, i swear he wrote it after watching clash of the titans on a bad acid trip. makes no sense at all.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:42, closed)
it does if you've read the Dark Tower series.

That said....
I was given Duma Key recently and it's a proper good read.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 16:22, closed)
i did not know that.
i may have to give that a try. thanks for the tip!

Totally agree that King's off the boil. But for me Gerald's Game was the last of his best. Simple concept done well - like Cujo.

It also has one of the two most frightening passages I've ever read (when it dawns on her that there's someone in the room).

i always felt that passage was heavy-handed, myself

You can all fuck right off
I just read 11.22.63 and loved it. There's supposed to be a new Dark Tower book in the Spring and I can hardly wait. I fucking love Stephen King.
