Disks! CDs! and other types of media...
All get called, by a certain generation... "tapes"

Get a CD software update from Sage? "Just upload the tapes for Sage would you?"

It gets better... There's no such thing as a USB memory stick. No. It's a "Saving Pen"

There's more of these, I just can't remember them right now... meh!

I mentioned somewhere else
that I still "tape" off the telly, either using a DVD recorder or the Sky+ box.
It's just easier than saying "I'll box that" or "I'll disc you a copy".

me too
Mind you, I still call the remote control a 'channel-changer' and the cinema is 'Lumiere Brothers patented magic-lantern show"

Surely the modern expression is "skyplus"
As in "I forgot to skyplus it", "I'm out tonight so I'll have to skyplus it"...

Good grief...
I got out of that a long time ago... they were worse, they used punch cards!

People in my work place call a projector “a Light Box”

I find it rather endearing. I’d like to live in a world where we travel in Horseless Carriages and view moving images on the Wireless Visual Telegraph…somebody help me here, there must be languages that work like this rather then inventing new words?

I have the same at my place of work
and USB memory sticks are thumb drives, jump drives, pen drives, etc.

Go back to Latin, it'd suit you....

Don't the Germans do that sort of thing
though I can't think of an example.
(, Mon 12 Apr 2010, 13:41, closed)
Well
I was going to suggest German, but this is a dangerous place to me ill informed pronouncements so I kept schtum.

This reminds me of
Leonard of Quirm from the Discworld books, and his utter lack of imagination when it comes to making names for his inventions. Take his submarine, or as he would say, "The Going Under The Water Safely Device".

german indeed-
Television is Fernseeapparat, IIRC - a machine for seeing a long way.

but then Television is an amalgam of greek and latin for "distance seeing".

I still use 'tapes'
to refer to language-learning audio, in whatever medium. It just seems wrong to say CDs/mp3s in that circumstance.

I've also noticed a bizarre kind of hypercorrection, where people will say "In 1949 Miles Davis released the CD Birth of the Cool" or DVD when they mean video cassette.

Be kind to our older brethren, though - technology moves a lot faster than in their day.
