This is a question Crap Gadgets

We wanted a monkey butler and bought one off eBay. Imagine our surprise when we found it was just an ordinary monkey with rabies. Worse: It had no butler training at all. Tell us about your duff technology purchases.

Thanks to Moonbadger for the suggestion

Sony products
Every Sony product I have owned has failed almost immediately after the warranty ran out, it was like it was programmed in! Microchips set to burn out, one week after it is a year old. I bet they do it on purpose.

Examples as follows.

Portable Minidisk player. the chip that controls compression burned out five days after it was a year old. Repair was not possible. I had saved up for three months to buy said device.

Sony Midi Hifi. Lasted thirteen months. Amplifier circuit went tits up.

Sony separates Hifi. Mini Disk could play previous players disks. Unit died. Radio worked brilliantly, was unable to get the sound out through both speakers though. CD player would not play CDR CDs, even if burned from I-tunes, then died. Replaced by new Cd player which gets stuck if CD left in tray for more than thirty seconds after end of play, requires turning off and on again! Replaced by Multi disk player which jammed, causing damage to CD. Finally amplifier packed up.

Replaced by Technics amplifier, still working fine after five years of use, even with home cinema plugged into it. Only Sony piece I have left is the tape deck. This works, but I have not used tapes for years.

Sony phone. Select button failed. Phone replaced. Select button failed. Different model of phone. Failed after 18 months. Replaced with Samsung, failed when sat on! Oops... Replaced with Nokia, tying hard to keep this one safe, it has games on it... Woo

errr...
IMHO, all one-year warranties are pointless.

All they do is duplicate existing consumer rights, while cynically encouraging the false belief that you can only expect something to work right for a year and then crap out.

The Sale of Goods Act gives a much better standard of protection; in the right circumstances you could expect seven years of product lifespan.

I'd say more, but: a/ It's late. b/ I'm tired. c/ It's probably long after it could have been useful.

Hmmm.
Original PlayStation: Still works fine.
Original PS2 bought on launch day: Died 2007 (After being lugged back and forth between the UK and The Falkland Islands a lot).
Replacement for PS2 bought in 2007: Still works fine.
Slimline PS2 bought in UK but left in Falkland Islands as other replacement for original (to save it being lugged back and forth): Still works fine.
PSP: Bought on launch day: Still works fine.
PS3: Bought 2010: Works fine so far.
Sony Ericsson K610im phone: Bought after my Phillips Savvy finally died: Still works fine.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S650 (or 700, not sure which as I don't have it to hand): Bought in 2007: No problems so far.
Sony Discman: Bought back in the mists of time: No problems other than needing new earphones occasionally after catching the wire on things.

Are you sure it's not just you?

Spookily enough I even got the k610 after my Phillips Savvy died.
Apart from my PS3 (original fat version) that died after 4 years, all the Sony stuff I've had still works perfectly.
My ES spec hi-fi units are all over 20 years old and still sound excellent.

Same for me
I have a sony walkman mp3 player that's been battered repeatedly for the last five year, it still has excellent sound quality and still works and holds together despite losing what looks like most of the screws holding it together. I like sony stuff.

Ha!
Psx, is a coaster
ps2, power bar blew up
ps3, overheats more than your mum, been sent for repair three times, on the second hard drive. usb ports have been burnt out once.
psp, more bad pixels than your mum
ericsson phones? I had the Spider-Man one, it was shite, like your mum
cybershot digital cam, memory sticks cost twice as much as sd cards around here.
I have horrible luck with Sony, yet I still buy them.

edit: several comments about your mum, sorry, she is really lovely, makes great bread...

My PS1
bought in 1995, still works fine (though sometimes it takes a couple of tries to read the disc).

They don't make them like that any more. Bye eck.

The Betamax in my mom's basement still works fine
It's lost the faceplates of all the buttons, but the thing still plays beautifully. We still occasionally use it to watch things like Star Wars or Monty Python.

I believe it was purchased in 1984 or thereabouts, and it's been used heavily since then.
