This is a question My First Experience of the Internet

We remember when this was all fields, and lived a furtive life of dial-up modems and dodgy newsgroups. Tell us about how you came to love the internets.

I feel old
In france- minitel- probably still running now

Over here- prestel and then cisco or misco I think it was called- my dad (IT teacher) was overjoyed. I was all like 'meh'
Then the internet finally became useful so the pR0n featured heavily in my life.
Then I discovered network play doom and other games;
Our college had 5 big computer rooms and I uploaded network doom and shared it with all student users The file name was 'playdoomnow'. Cue the hopeless administrator running around wondering why the network was crashing\slow as 300 students all learn to play doom in an immense multiplayer match! Many lols were had.
Now I just use it for work.

Was it Quake maybe?
I thought Doom's max number of players was 4?

I'm not even sure you could host more than 1 game on a network subnet either as it used broadcast packets. That really used to flood fledgeling a networks IIRC.

Netware
used to have a 'lite' version, which was basically a peer to peer sharing system. It came with an ASCII text game where you;d be hunting each other through a blocky maze.

We have 5 or 6 people on a peer to peer network, and used to quietly play this, but quite often someone would get shot, and leap up in the air and shout 'you cunt!' or similar.

The people not on this network had no idea what was going on, and got rather miffed about it.

Netware Lite
*shudder*

Hmm. What were those Novell network cards? 1000s and 2000s...

We used to use some shitty
cheap things, can't remember what they were called, but 'eagle' seems to ring a bell.

Ours had BNC connectors. Much better than CAT 5, as you can't connect a load of RJ45 plugs together to make them look like a mad system of drainpipes.

Minitel
is supposed to be switched off on 30th June this year. I believe the reason is that there isn't enough Blessed content to justify its continued existence, but it may also have something to do with its inherent rubbishness. Still, all good things must eventually fade away so I hope that there is a huge party to see it off in style.

Minitel
I used to work as a sex-chat operator on Minitel lines (if anyone is aware of them in France, they're the ones called 3615 SEXME and stuff like that), pretending to be women. Oddest job I've ever had.
