It depresses me that none of the parties are interested in nationalising the rail network, despite it being far cheaper to do than to continue subsidising the companies. From the figures I saw, it would cost only six months subsidy to buy back all the TOCs and rolling stock. Imagine how cheap it would be...

As an example, I go from Hornsby to Sydney each day and a month's fare is $148 (so ~95 squid) - and that's for a 35 km journey. On top of that, everyone complains about how expensive the trains are here...

Having dodged a couple of fares
mostly due to running to catch the train & not having time to go to the machine (in the days before multiriders - oyster cards to you rabble).
I got nabbed once, refused to give my details for the ticket, showed the conductors/rent-a-cops my willingness to pay the fare (shwoerd I even had the right change for my ticket), met the cops & a lawyer friend at the station, bought my ticket (cops were happy) & told the rail cops to stick it.
Me - -$2.70(ish), Transits(Renta-rail-cops) - looking like the fuckwits they were.

I somtimes have been forced to skip fairs because a ticket machine didnt like getting £2.20 in 20p s. I was forced into it but no inspectors showed up for it.

While I agree that the train companies charge far too much
dodging fares isn't the way to go about changing things.

Meanwhile everyone else has to pick up the tab for you. I once heard that if everyone paid the tax they should rather than some people dodging it then income tax would be about half what it is now.

Petrol would still cost £1.30 a litre (and rising), home and contents insurance would not go down, train fares would still go up. It would just result in larger profit margins in the private sector. As for the public sector, that really boils my piss. There would always be some senior cunt nugget giving the go ahead to another millennium dome, ID card scheme or just half a million quid worth of shiny stonework to tart up a small piece of the local high street while the natives watch double deckers disappear into the smaller potles. My local authority are making all sorts of cuts at the moment.
