Arterial blood samples - ouch!! I had to have them a couple of times when I have been been in hospital with asthma. It's the way you feel the needle threading its way between the bones that is truly cringeworthy!

on a recent asthma emergency trip to A&E. I had never heard of them, and was almost pooping my pants when the doctor lady explained what would be happening. 'We can't actually see the artery, so once I've punctured the skin, I'll have to feel around for it. Is that ok?'

I would know the pain
As I have had it done. It sucks the cheese from under the rim of a line of syphyllitic dead donkey cocks, but seeing as I was half conscious with a dose of pneumonia which had also happily triggered off an asthma attack, I wasn't in much of a position to argue about it.

In cases like these O2 100% is the nicest thing I can think of
