hairis a pain in the arse. i did this recently for a friend (hence not posting the whole thing, i doubt she'd appreciate that) and gave up even trying to do it properly and used a fake comb brush on gimp instead. i like how it came out.
edit: this *was* virtually a straight trace. a wide range of brushes and shades of grey and all, but still a trace. i'm not in the slightest bit ashamed.
