
You should make sure to adjust your white balance, it makes a massive difference. Set it from something that will be white in IR, not white in normal colour (the leaves in that pic for example, or grass. I found that some of my black socks are best for doing it ironically).

As for the other stuff, that might mean reading the manual (actually thanks for the advice it's knowing what to do with the information that I've struggled with). My photography has been pretty much happy accidents but that may need to change as I'm being given a 350D for the arrival of my first child.
