nearly bought a rat for our daughters birthday but they recommend you house them in a glass tank at a minimum size of 4x3x2 or summat.Seeing as the rat cost £5 , the housing would have cost about £120 so we decided against it.

The cage always costs the most.
Supposedly, one can give them the run of the house and provide a litter box. I always had rats and mice as pets and the cool thing is, you buy the terrarium once and they die off every couple of years. You just keep restocking.

i see your point but for an initial outlay it seemed a bit much , we couldn't give it the run of the house because the dog would probably eat it
