Pretty clear distinction...Fox - feathers and parts dotted everywhere.
Illness - lifeless but largely intact chicken.
Not a lot of grey area ;p
My folks used to have chickens. My dad could never bring himself to wring 'em when they were on their way out. In a farming area, he actually suffered the indignity of taking a chicken to the vet to have it put down...
