The common cicadas hang on trees, and sing at night.
These guys fly across the interstate highway in areas with lots of trees. My car and I have been going through a lot of window washing fluid this week :)

Yeah we get the same daytime/late evening/night varieties hereand there's a 17-year cycle (I think) variety here too which came out after I'd been here 5 or 6 years. They were absolutely everywhere for about 2 weeks.
