Saw heaps of them in Amsterdam a couple of years agoand up close they're even more amazing. Not at all the brush strokes I'd have expected on the lacy bits - but perhaps that's more my ignorance of oil techniques than anything to do with him.

i'm not great with oils, too fiddlyi much prefer acrylics. holbein's work on hair is fantastic, the detail is amazing

I know - he really does look incredibly detailedbut even the hair looks unexpectedly like unlikely clumps of paint up close. Amazing technique and artistic sense he must have had to know how it would look when your face isn't up close.
