# Yeah created a still back plate and did a rough garbage matte around the cat's jump
so it actually cuts a lot of movement out of the footage and makes it easier to create a better gif with less compression.

BTW if anybody thinks I'm ripping off Herman :D this was done specifically for Herman so I take no credit here at all - I actually just enjoyed the practice.

# a back plate is basically a blank plate of the image
I took a part of the image when the cat had jumped off the bed and part of the picture before the cat had jumped and put the two halves together to create a back plate or blank plate where it's just the mirror, room, bed but no cat. Then I took the movie and masked around the cat (garbage matte) and overlaid that on the blank back plate so the background remains static and the only moving bit is the cat

# Thanks maiden
i sort of understand it

# i am not totally well-versed in graphics terminology,
but I am sure she created a background of just the bed, walls, mirrorframe and the leg. Then she added the cat and vibrating mirrors as layers with transparent surroundings. Portions of the bed and denim-clad leg were likely left on around the cat to allow more realistic movement of the bedding and surrounding areas. (notice the denim leg crinkle a bit when the cat lands near it)

EDIT: basically, the same thing she said, but worded differently

And WOO!! by the way -- very smooth

# Yeah that's the rough garbage matte
I feathered it so that it would blend in but there is always going to be some discrepancy between the still frame back plate and the edges of the moving matte especially as the camera seems to have been hand-held. I could have done a more precise rotascope on the cat but as there is a lot of motion blur it really would have been over-egging the pudding.
