It can be done;
If you practice. Make a habit of asking yourself whether you are dreaming while finding your hands or flicking a light switch and/or looking at text. The movie 'Waking Life' is sophomoric but helpful with these points.
My favourite kind of lucid dream leaves the reality of the dream intact while allowing me a measure of omnipotence ie: there are zombies and I'm bored of using this shovel as a weapon, where is a Swiss army knife? Oh: right over there. Or: oh shit I hate working at this restaurant but hey I just realized I'm dreaming and this customer is kind of cute *does her on the table*.
So nothing too profound, but fun.
