I remember during the 1990s recession, there was a programe on BBC about a guy who had been a banker, and had fallen from the heights.
He was moaning about how difficult it was to survive on a wage of only (and this is the 1990s) £30pa. He said something along the lines of (sincerely), "I haven't been able to have any champagne for months!"
