It was an entertainment for an after party. Personally I hate it when my workplace has a party and tries to involve work-based 'entertainment'.
Last Christmas we had a 'fun quiz' about core company values and estimating various statistics about output. It wasn't a patch on the last year, when they'd had a band on that featured the brother of the keyboard player who played one of the parts on an EMF song.
All that said, there is never, ever any excuse at all for Russel Brand singing.
