She's blatantly the repressed female working classesdesperately trying to run away from the constraints of her social class, but unable to do so because of her handicapped feet. And as for the fish slice, well that's obviously a metaphor for her attempts to prepare complex dishes that do not tally with her station, when she is only ever able to conjure a boil-in-the bag cod fillet with parsley sauce from her left hand (i.e. gauche).
