Ha, I gave up on using stiltsThey're great until you've run out of arrows and there's a pack of mobs farting around waiting for you to exit.
I just plaster the area in torches so that nothing spawns overground. I only then have to deal with the occasional Enderman that pops up from underground. As a bonus it also tends to discourage Enderman from running off with anyhubcaps blocks that aren't nailed down.
