As an American I think I can answer that.There is a segment of the population who are deeply conservative, at least in their own minds, and will have a knee-jerk reaction against anyone they see as liberal in any way. You have them over there, the Daily Mail crowd and the BNP that I know of.
Add in the fact that Obama is black (which gets a knee-jerk reaction in itself) and that Romney is about as white as you can get and they'll ignore anything else that might put them off him. He's a Republican, he's white, he has good hair and gleaming teeth, and that's about all that matters to these people. Hell, they came close to getting Sarah fucking Palin into the White House! That alone should tell you how idiotic that segment of the population can be...
