You get a lot of people who voted the same as their parents, who voted the same as their parents, etc. Same as in Blighty: "I've voted [party] man and boy, me."
Plus, the reach of fundamentalist Christianity out there is unlike anything you'd see outside of the US and isn't considered unusual by many.

but some of his and ryan's policies/religious leanings almost make dubya look liberal. i just find it interesting that things like abortion are even on the agenda again (and even in the UK with jeremy hunt at the moment), when to me it's an argument from 20 or 30 years ago... it's almost like people are regressing to an era before the 60s.

Abortion is not on the table, not even by a long shot. There are many other items of misinformation, but you'll not find any good information of b3ta, nor on bbc for that matter. It's sad, really. To address the question of how it can happen I'll just say $16 trillion in debt properly scares a majority of voters, and many have already noticed Romney is not the cartoon strawman of his media depiction, and they've rejected most all mainstream media.

There is a segment of the population who are deeply conservative, at least in their own minds, and will have a knee-jerk reaction against anyone they see as liberal in any way. You have them over there, the Daily Mail crowd and the BNP that I know of.

Add in the fact that Obama is black (which gets a knee-jerk reaction in itself) and that Romney is about as white as you can get and they'll ignore anything else that might put them off him. He's a Republican, he's white, he has good hair and gleaming teeth, and that's about all that matters to these people. Hell, they came close to getting Sarah fucking Palin into the White House! That alone should tell you how idiotic that segment of the population can be...
