# Sorry to TJ
but does anyone know how to do transparency in GIMP if the person you're trying to cut out is wearing a white shirt?

# Not really sure what you mean
I do use gimp and may be able to help, but I need more info.

# Well
I'm pretty useless with anything like this, but in GIMP you can easily cut out an object by using the magic wand to delete surrounding colours, then convert the white background to transparent by using 'add alpha channel' then 'colour to alpha', so that you can stick your cutout over another picture. If you try to do this with a person wearing a white shirt, however, the shirt is made transparent as well so you can't effectively stick it over anything. I could just paint the shirt white again afterwards but it's full of folds and creases and woudln't look right as a block of white.

# Actually, forget it
I must have been doing something stupid, it seems to work now...

# If you add the alpha channel before you cut it out you won't have to colour to alpha.
I certainly don't. Sometimes I just select the background, invert selection and copy/pasta. There are a few ways around this.

# I think I was'd probably got the wrong thing highlighted while trying to add to alpha
It seems to work now. Thanks for trying to help
