Charles Hawtrey or Frankie Howerd perhaps?
Good shout about Peter Butterworth though.

charles hawtrey was like an elderly drunken pixie

I thought Kenneth Cope was good but always liked Jim Dale.
God if only they made movies like that these days!

If you had to pick one of them out of the whole cast it would hands down be Jim Dale.

Yes the Bresslaw thing
I haven't seen Carry On Abroad recently enough to have an opinion either way, and I completely agree with your description of Hawtrey.

I loved them as a kid,
went through a PC "oh what terrible unreconstructed humour" phase and now they are genuinely laugh out loud again.

If you were to say you had a crush on him in Carry On Girls then I might be able to sympathize slightly.
