I think there is parts inside that move very fast
and without some air flow maybe it would not reach the speeds it would like.
You don't wont dust to be dragged in thu the vent holes
but you need one ( for air movement ) and that's what it is.

The boring answer is probably accounting for different temperatures and hence air expansion and contraction.

Actually, it prevents frame distortion when the air pressure changes.
Very small changes in the geometry can really screw these up. Even loosening or tightening one of the cover screws can make a drive unreadable if it is already falling away from tolerable tolerances (LOL)
