True.I think the point was that the P38 was designed with superchargers and counter rotating props. The RAF insisted on a version with those features removed and found it wanting, cancelling their order. The U.S. then had considerable success with it as designed.

It was a damn fine 'planebut just a trifle over-engineered for anyone on a budget.
Edit: In the end a Mustang could do escourt and a Typhoon could do ground attack at half the price.
