I know of the Necronomicon only because of the Evil Dead. also, Tolkien and Prattchett were cooler

The one story I do recommend is the novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Its final published version was reworked and improved by its publisher August Derleth and it's a very good read. Very original and inventive. The Dreams in the Witch House and The Dunwich Horror are also good fun. Most of his other stuff isn't, the quality of the writing is uneven at best (and awful at worst) and it's full of racism. But do read Charles Dexter Ward, it's a good yarn.
