Basically, take Dutch by the throat in one hand,disembowel it with the other, slap it around a bit and you have Afrikaans.

i was forced tolearn afrikaans at schol and found it quite easy.. still hated it and forgot it very soon afterwards...

yeah, it has quite a basic structureand relies heavily on borrowing from other languages, esp. English. It's the coarse, gutteral accent that comes with it that bothers me too.
