prior to XPthey worked over netbios rather than IP if I remember correctly, so they would only work on local networks (netbios is nonroutable I think)
Now that the messenger service uses IP these messages are routable and can now be sent all over the world on the intermaweb!

I get themon windows 2000. Might be post SP2 they started appearing.

i supposedisabling netbios over tcpip for the internet connection could work too? i've never seen it suggested for this though
