for proper 1st generation photo-montage...check out John Heartfield and the Berlin Dadaists. The FIRST photoshoppers, pre-dating the surrealists by a good couple years.

Heartfield seems a bit crude and preachy, after all this time.A lot of the political stuff is at the level of the Bush=monkey images - and was evidently similarly ineffective.
But I agree that it was very innovative at the time.
