The left hand thing with 3 buttons on affects the 'Q' dial. Get the 'Q' dial to 50 by pressing the top button to go up, and the bottom button to go down. Set it with the middle button when the arrow points to 50 'Q's.
(Trust me, this will make sense when you look at the screen again)
Now click the big wheelly-knob thing directly above your spaceman's head. A ladder will appear, and you can get out.
