but it looks like 2 or 3 layers, displaced by incrementally increasing amounts in a 2 frame animation.

stereographic images are taken with two cameras normal eye distance apart. When you view them though a dewice it looks like it is in 3d, as your brain makes up the difference between the two images.

In the matrix (or similar) they just line up about 35 cameras, and play the images one after another.

Usually they'd be presented side by side and you'd have to cross your eyes to get the 3d effect. People like structural biologists use this kind of thing to visualise molecules in 3d.
