That's odd because I think Miyazaki makes some of the most realistic characters.Kiki is just a normal girl (who happens to be a witch). She has to go off to a new town as part of her training and has to find her feet. She's at times optimistic and adventurous and at times scared and frightened.
The characters might not be as familiar to us as some genres but they are (I think) very realistic.
EDIT: I think Cowboy Beebop is great to (if you haven't got them, go get the soundtrack CDs - Yoko Kanno is fantastic).
