I'm using Paint Shop Pro 7 and I found that the lasso with the point-to-point selection to be the best way to do this so far.

I know nothing of PSP

there is some advice below

I use the lasso tool in photoshop and then touch up the edges with a feathered eraser

i find smart edge works quite well unless it's an almost white pic on a white background, or something like that
