i watched a programme a while back...
...where they carbon dated the turin shroud and it wasn't old enough to be the real thing. what they did find though is that it dated to the time of leonardo da vinci and the materials used were available where he lived.
also, he had a big vendetta against the pope at the time as he had forbidden da vinci from cutting up dead bodies to look inside...
he had the motive and the talent...

I saw a different program
which dated it to the dark ages or something, and reckoned it was probably done (accidentally) with a process similar to long-exposure photography... Da Vinci's a good bet I suppose, but I wonder if even he was that smart
