I've seen it happen...A stopper broke, the rope jerked FAST around the room, moving up and down by about 6' as it did so, threatening to pull anyone entangled in it through a brass-lined hole about 3' diameter. All accompanied by the desperate clanging of the bells.
Everyone else got their bells under control, someone grabbed the rope & steadied it.
quite interesting but no-one got hung.
(when in a belltower, everyone not ringing sits with their legs under the seat. No-one touches a rope unless they know where the bell is & are going to ring it. If you ever leave the tower with any bells up, you make sure they are clearly labelled!)
