there's a tool in Illustratorcalled gradient mesh which allows you to build a matrix over the image then 'push and pull' the image to distort it - you can also adjust the colour at each node in the mesh and do really nice colour blends - I have only just started using it so I'm not completly up to speed with how it works - but I'm pretty sure it'll do what you want
