Seriously - it was for this of reason that I stopped using Word.I wouldn't wipe my arse with it now. Well, figuratively speaking anyway. Um - MS Equation Editor from the ValuePak? Worth a shout perhaps. You coudl also try and find a maths font thats not Symbol, but I wouldn't know where to look.
