Yo!You can only do an upgrade to XP if the version of XP you got is an upgrade version. I always reinstall from scratch when it comes to OSs anyways - saves a lot of headaches in the longrun.

Ifthe cd is bootable you should be able to do either - but yep, it's a darn good idea to format and start again.
