because he is tyler. notice that before he learns this, you never hear his name spoken at all

read the book too, it's really good.

sometimes norton's character is called "jack" merely for identification purposes.

is meant to be a generic name so he personlises the whole story line, also their just fucking stupid bits froma national geographic mag he found in tyler's (his) rented house. (I think it was national geographic i havent read it for a while)
