I've seen my share of backwoods folk, but I'm not too familiar with the hermit types.

uber-hermits up there where the highways come to an end and the dirt roads carry on.

Might not help that I have brown skin and chose to go exploring up there with a gay friend (who insisted on wearing earrings). We felt sorta different.

You never know with some people. Some are prejudiced against anyone different, and others are curious. Did you get to talk to many people?
