I've seen my share of backwoods folk, but I'm not too familiar with the hermit types.
Is that the sort?

Yeah.
uber-hermits up there where the highways come to an end and the dirt roads carry on.
Might not help that I have brown skin and chose to go exploring up there with a gay friend (who insisted on wearing earrings). We felt sorta different.

I can imagine.
Were they friendly at all, though?
You never know with some people. Some are prejudiced against anyone different, and others are curious. Did you get to talk to many people?

they don't talk
or... at least I never met one that did, beyond the required amount.

Okay, that's odd.
I wonder what motivates them to live that way?

It works for older folks, I think.
New Hampshire's not much different. Basically they don't bother anyone and they don't want anyone to bother them.

I suppose that's a fair way to be.

Every time I go up there, I get stuck in some area with a bunch of private beaches (or a strip of beach 50 feet long that you have to pay $10 to park at). Very upsetting.

there's
a little inlet on Cape Neddick on the coast road between York and Ogunquit that I'm partial to. Ogunquit's not bad, but it's full of Quebec tourists in the summer and parking is a problem. Thers's Long Sands and Short Sands in York, but they're pretty touristy too.
I really don't know too much about anything further north.
