from the Russian front ( german of course ) and the rifle is definitely not a Mosin Nagent ( Russian ) and looks like a Mauser 98K so my money is on German infantry but the collar and tie has me befuddled unless you shopped it in.

but an officer would never have had a carbine rifle. It's a whole contradiction and I can't cope with it ;)
