What's wrong with filtersif the results are good? Why are some functions of image manipulation software good, and others bad? I don't get that.

I love filters.Just in this case it was all stretch/morph/blend then overpaint/multiply, copy layer overpaint smudge/dodge/burn/ more smudge and multiply. If the same result can be got in 30 seconds with a filter then please, somebody tell me how and save me the time and effort.
