Did you get your film stuff sorted out? I was right about theVOB files, you can change the extension to mpg then join and split them to your heart's content with that stuff I sent you. ( hope you got that )

I found that DVD shrink has a really pleasing bit where you can select a start and stop point.

I'm sure that most of the software you can use does the same thing, it's just a matter of finding these things out when your software comes without manuals ;)
Nero can do the same but it's not entirely obvious.
