start with installing win32 apache as that's quite simple to install from the binary
and work from there
*edit* yes, the download apache is a little bit of a mess
pick a mirror, there's a list of crap, try httpd
then in there 'binaries'
and in there 'win32'
there's a choice of different versions, 1.3.35, 2.0.58, and 2.2.2
the higher the number the newer, I don't know what the major issues are for each version number, but some of the addon modules for apache only work with certain versions, that's why you've got a choice of three there.
the .msi files or the big .zip files are what you want.
