The earphones have a 5 metre lead stored in the shoe and extendsfor even those freaky tall people.

Yeah buteven though my headphones don't do that I can still sit close enough to not need that. Yet I can still manage to pull them out of my mp3/speakers/ears when I move. Apple are just taking the piss and milking people for more cash.
