Thats the whole point.The cat is in a state of quantum flux whilst the observer is ignorant of the outcome. By opening the box the observer collapses the quantum wave function through their interaction with the process, reducing it to one of two states, either alive or dead.
It's all about how until anything is interacted with, ie: observed, it is in an unfixed state.
